GBA athlete takes home Olympic gold for HKSAR
粤港澳大湾区运动员为香港特别行政区赢得奥运金牌
24-year-old Cheung Ka-long has made history by becoming the first athlete from the Hong Kong SAR to take home a gold medal at the Olympic Games since the city was handed back to China from the United Kingdom.
Upon winning the medal, Cheung told the media, “I thought to myself - everyone was either an Olympic champion or a world champion, and I was nobody. That helped me relax a bit. At this moment, I still cannot believe I’m the champion.”
Cheung took home the medal in the medal bout for the Men’s individual foil in Fencing against Italian opponent D. Garozzo as the underdog. Cheung’s Gold marks Hong Kong’s second gold medal at the Olympics in history. Hong Kong is an integral part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
